Hit the Trail: Focus on Fannin was the theme of this year’s

fundraiser for CORE — Citizens Organizing for Resources and

Environment. We are commonly remembered as the organization

that formed in 2006 to ward off a coal-fired power plant in Fannin county.

We are now focusing our attention on encouraging local food production and sustainability.
On Saturday, September 5th (Labor Day weekend) at Lake Fannin (100 mi. NE of Dallas in Fannin County) CORE promoted the gifts of Fannin County — our history, our unique landscape, our rural environment, our talents.
The event began with mountain bike riders experiencing the personality
of Lake Fannin's new professionally designed trail.
In the afternoon, Nature Tours were led by Professor George Diggs
of Austin College, and Lake Fannin History Tours led by Greg Hall.
There were Two Photography Contests, Live Entertainment by great local entertainers, Table Games and Outdoor Games, a Scavenger Hunt, and a Prairie Dinner of locally grown foods — masterfully prepared by Cappy's.
The Jam Session scheduled for after dinner turned into a serenade by John Lee Boyer on his guitar accompanied by Wildwood and Della Dean on their bois d' Arc bones while the rest of us rushed to break down our 'encampment' and pack up before dark.
*The Mountain Bike Ride
The Lake Fannin trails are sweepy and fun with breathtaking views
of the lake. The almost 6 miles of trail is all singletrack, designed
by S&S trail services and built by the Friends of Lake Fannin,
DORBA and S&S staff.
The trail has a different feel than nearby Bonham State Park in that
it is one large flowy loop, and the trail never seems to travel in a
straight line for long. The biggest challenge is following the trail as
it meanders back and forth in and out of ravines and over bridges.

*Two Photo Contests
"Focus on Fannin County" — for the serious photographers:
This contest required that printed photos be submitted to our experienced judges by August 25th. The theme was: "What makes Fannin County a unique ‘gift’ to us and our visitors — our history, our unique landscape, our rural environment, our talents." [The winning entries]
"Capture the Moment" — for ‘everyday’ photographers:
This contest was for digital photos taken there at the event three categories: Wildlife (critters or plants),
People, and Landscape. We had a computer and printer there to print the entries for a "Jackpot" contest with everyone at the event voting. Unfortunately, a technical glitch stopped us cold. However, we're in the process of gathering the entries so the Red River Photo Club can act as the judges. There will be 1st, 2nd, 2rd-place ribbons for each category, and the entry with the most votes will be enlarged and framed for the contestant. [The winning entries]
*Live Entertainment
Our local entertainers did,
in fact, entertain us!
They were great!!!
